Penannulars are cloak pins or open ring brooches used to secure clothing.

Utilized in Roman and Celtic times(historic reproduction shown),

Penannular Brooches began to appear in significant numbers in Britain

ca. 200 AD, and quickly gained widespread popularity.  The Penannular was the origin of some of the later medieval brooch and cloak pin styles, including closed ring and heart shaped brooches.
